Dongara is a town located 351 km north-northwest of Perth on the Brand
Highway. The town is located at the mouth of the Irwin River. In recent
years the area has been marketed as the 'Rock lobster capital of
Australia'.
Just 3½ hours north of Perth by car lies Western Australia's Mid West
region and the twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison. The
Administrative Centre for the Shire of Irwin is situated in Dongara and
overlooking the marina a few kilometres away is the twin town of Port
Denison. This area offers a relaxed lifestyle with beautiful beaches,
historical sites and a healthy fishing industry.
Originally built on a strong rural economy, Dongara and Port Denison
now have a thriving rock lobster fishing and processing industry and is
ever-increasing in popularity as a place for tourists.
Also known to many as the "wildflower region", this area is home to
some of the world's finest collections of flowering plants.
Dongara/Port Denison are beautiful seaside towns, a
comfortable scenic drive 359kms from Perth. The trip
can either be made straight up the Brand Highway - or take
Indian Ocean Drive from Cervantes. As an alternative, there is also the
inland road which includes many small communities and
wonderful wildflowers in season.
