An Outback holiday in the Mid West is ideal
for those who want a change from the noise and bustle of the big
cities. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in wildflowers
and savour the sweet scent of everlastings and bush flowers that
hangs on the crystal clear night air.
This can begin only a day's drive from Perth.
The Outback is no longer too remote or uncomfortable
to experience at first-hand. It's sweeping vistas, rugged hills,
spectacular sunsets and storied places are now easily accessible
by road. And the legendary hospitality of its station people has
been extended to include the accommodation of your choice - from
tents, to shearers' quarters, to comfortable old homesteads. In
the picturesque turn-of-the-century towns, hotel, motel and caravan
park accommodation is generally available.
What will impress you most, is the totally
different lifestyle of a sheep or cattle station. Life is determined
by the seasons, not the bank managers' or what's on television.
It's a place where city people rediscover the art of conversation
- even laugh uproariously around a campfire for the first time
in years. You can go on bush treks, picnic amongst the wildflowers,
fossick for gold, look for gemstones, take in the view of the
never ending carpet of colour from a distant hill, view massive
gold mining operations, log bird species and other fauna.
You can enjoy ancient attractions such as
Walga Rock near Cue, Dalgaranga Meteorite Crater (a small crater
between Yalgoo and Cue), Wilgie Mia Ochre Mine (near Cue and claims
to be the oldest mine in the world), Jokers Tunnel (near Yalgoo)
and The Granites (Mount Magnet). Check at local tourist centres
for updated information on the road conditions.
The Murchison Settlement (190km north of
Mullewa and 200km west of Cue) has camping facilities at the Murchison
Roadhouse (also fuel supply) and close by is Wooleen Station,
winner of a National Tourism award. The settlement, located in
some of the best wildflower country in the region is on the inland
route to Mount Augustus and Monkey Mia, features a unique rammed
earth museum and a Landcare award winning botanical walk.
During the wildflower season tourist information
is available from local Tourist Information Centres and Shire
Offices in the following Outback towns. Wiluna , Sandstone , Meekatharra
, Mount Magnet, Cue, Yalgoo and Mullewa.
